There's a dramatic decrease in activity when you're the single male. You no longer have that, "Hey, I'm bored. I'm coming over" plan that you come to rely on with your girlfriend. Your Friday nights are suddenly free. And guess what? So are your Saturday nights. Sunday afternoons...
Coming back from work yesterday, I tossed my keys and wallet into my desk, Leo was on his way out the door.
So@24: Where are you going?
Leo: Girl invited me out for dinner. Can't pass up a free meal, right?
So@24: I hate you.
Well fuck. Now I'm bored as hell and alone in the apartment. I paced around back and forth until I said, "Fuck it." and Googled movie times for The Dark Knight in my area. Sure enough, there was a showing in 30 mins a few blocks away.
I've never been to a movie alone before, but I figured now is a good of time as any to try tip toe out of my comfort zone. After all, I gotta get used to this shit when Leo takes off.
I took complete advantage of looking like a 14 year old and purchased a single, student discount ticket. An evening showing of the The Dark Knight on a Monday night; not too many people in the theater. These guys were probably seeing it for the second time, like myself. I grabbed a center seat and enjoyed 152 minutes of complete film-ecstasy.
When the theater lights went up, I got a chance to take in my fellow theater goers. There were about 6 or 7 of us. All men. All single. All going to a movie alone on a week night.
We were a little club. We had this unspoken bond. We weren't the single guys all scrambling to get the last decent scented candle in the "Bed + Bath" section of Target in preparations of having a girl come over. We ventured out of our studio apartments sans a girl on our arms. We were just... "those" guys.
Before stepping out to begin my walk home, I zipped up my hoodie and looked over at another guy who was lighting up a cigarette. We made eye contact and I gave him a nod:
"I'm with you buddy, I'm with you."

48 Tickle My Ego?:
The first time I went to a movie by myself I waited till it was dark inside before I snuck in. It wasn't so bad, half way through it I forgot I was even alone.
It's sometimes better going on your own anyway. No one to disturb your viewing.
I think going to a movie alone is completely enjoyable. You don't have to argue about where to park, what movie you're going to see, or where you're going to sit in the theater. It's pure bliss! Glad you took the plunge :)
I did that one time... it depressed the shit outta me. Don't think I can do that, or sit at a table in a fancy restaurant solo either. I'm not that confident. Good job tho... well done.
I totally applaud you for going alone. I have never done it. But I'm sure it would be alright. The only time I wouldn't want to be alone would be during a horror flick. ha ha ha
I avoid this by having an awesome gay bff who I can take to movies and pretend that he's my boyfriend. It works quite well for me.
I've always thought about going to a movie alone. But usually Ijust end up renting a movie by myself, way less effort and I get to stay in my PJ's.
Great post, you rock my socks. But not in that way. Plus I'm wearing flip flops, no socks.
I have never gone to the movies alone, but I have dined alone so I don't think I would have a problem with it. It sounds like you had a good time and probably forgot you were alone for 152 minutes at least. Hey - note to your single female readers, all the single guys are at the movies on Monday nights!
I think I'm going to sound a little odd but I actually didn't usually enjoy going to the movies with my ex-boyfriends. And my current one isn't all the crazy about the movies. I usually go with a friend. I've always had a "movie buddy" that is not a significant other. Weird, huh?
I've only been to a movie by myself once. It was nice not having someone judge me while I stuffed my face with a pretzel AND nachos.
Did you get a reponse from those girls on Craig's List? Just wondering if you know where you're moving yet, er, what situation you're heading into...
It doesn't take being a single guy to go to the movies by yourself. I bet the last 20 movies I went to go see I had to purchase a single ticket.
The luxury of living out of a suitcase.
The first time is the hardest...it gets better.
I'm totally into going to a movie by myself. The downside is concessions are expensive when you're not sharing; the upside is no one judges you when you sneak in a 22 oz. Newcastle and Stacy's Naked Pita Chips to nosh on. Something to think about...
I think it's absolutely worth doing this kind of thing. Being single is the time to appreciate things like this because it's one of the few times in your life where you can quietly breed a hate for your comfort zone. It's a good thing.
LOL I've gone to the movies alone many times. When you think about it, it's not really a social activity.
haha so cute. I've been meaning to do this. I was going to see the same movie on a day off by myself but I ran out of time.
I think its cool if girls do it too right?
I keep telling myself some time during the day I'm going to go to see the Dark Knight alone, since I have yet to see it. But every time I put the key in the ignition and start driving, I always end up at the water instead of the movie theater. Which is even more depressing to do alone.
Congrats! That is the fist step of the road! Actually, I don't find going to the movies alone scary, because most of the time you're in the darkness and your attention is captured anyways. One of my solo movie visits actually ended up being the only person in the theatre. Such a sense a luxury.
See, this is something I've always wanted to do but just haven't had the nerve. I'm a wuss like that. At least you get all the popcorn to yourself.
I like it! It's good that you had the guts to go on your own--many people never will. And i love the nod. The nod says it all. It's a universal symbol!
Aw! Good for you. I've never gone to a movie on my own. But actually, if there's something on I want to watch, may not be a bad idea...
I never knew doing things like that alone was a weird thing to do until one of my friends seemed shocked that I would even think about venturing to the mall by myself. I love my friends, but sometimes being alone can be a good thing!
The only thing more intimidating (than a movie alone) is going to a nice restaurant alone. That's why I tend to eat poorly when on the road for work: going to fast food/take out cuts down on the minutes that people are looking at you and feeling sorry for you.....
Sometimes, I actually prefer to do things by myself anyway. Plus, The Dark Knight can be seen under any circumstance, and you didn't have some annoying person asking you questions about what's going on. That always pisses me off. :)
Wow! This is a break through! I know where I'm going to go now to meet guys...the movie theater on a Monday night!
I wish I had the guts to do something like this. I first time I ever went out to a restaurant by myself was torture. I'll never do it again. There's no way I could try the movie thing.
I'm willing to sit home alone...and pathetic.
Been There, done that...
and really, it isnt that bad.
i was doing it all wrong! that's were all the decent single men were: movie theatres on a week night! DAMNIT... and there i was plowing the bars and.......ok we wont go there....
:-) congrats on a milestone! you made it! we knew you could do it.
I've thought about doing that myself. But alas, I'd be the only single girl there.
At least you weren't "those" guys at the bar.
wink.
we need to be friends on gchat.
that is all.
buddy! this post made me sad : (
I dont mind going to the movies by myself - why should have to wait until something that I want to watch, but none of my stupid friends wants to see, comes out on DVD? Plus I can sit where ever i want ( always back row if possible ... )and dont feel obligated to share my snacks.
Once, i was eve the ONLY person at a film. I mean, the empty chairs and no-one else. What was like having the biggest flat screen ever all to myself!
I've never done this. Not b/c I don't want to but I'm more w/ Lyla Lou on this one. I'd rather rent one, curl up on my couch in my pj's and cuddle w/ my pooch while stuffing my face w/ micro popcorn and wine/beer/alchol of choice. It's cheaper and more comfy.
On the other hand, my co-worker does this ALL the time and luvs going alone. She says it's better that way even.
Whatever floats your boat. But I say good for you. I think it's great. Cheers! :)
Ha ha ha. I've watched Dark Knight too. And its not only single guys who have Sat nights, Friday nights and Sunday afternoons free. You learn to adapt to being alone quite easily. You take up hobbies like ballet, surfing and rock climbing. Also I've done the movie thing by myself as well but that was generally when I was playing sick and took the day off work.
That is incredibly strange.
Especially considering Lynn is one of my best friends/roommate.. I'm hoping Leo doesn't fall into the ex category anytime soon.
And I envy your ability to go to a movie alone. I could barely handle shopping at first.. I can't imagine sitting in the dark alone for that long.
Thanks for being my first comment by the way!
Totally legit dude.
I saw Dark Knight by myself too.
As for having seen Juno alone...
aint nothing wrong with gonig to a movie by yourself....its the creepy old men in trench coats sitting in the back by themselve sthat you have to watchout for!
I did the same thing. I sucked it up and saw Dark Night alone. Except when I got to the theatre, I bumped into a friend of mine and his girlfriend. The theater was actually packed and I ended up sitting with them.
I think sitting next to a lovey-dovey couple is worse then going alone. It just made me feel more lonely.
I think I would like seeing a movie alone. I actually really enjoy going to dinner by myself.
Take a book, order whatever I want (as much as I want) flirt with my cute server etc.
In fact, I might go see a movie alone tonight just to try it.
The Dark Knight < The Last Night
Oh my goodness, it's not THAT bad!
I would rather go to a movie alone than sit through a "date" like I had the other night...
I give you all sorts of credit for doing that. That was something I could never muster up the courage for.
Movie Night alone... BALLSY..
I commend you lol
Browchicakbrowcow!
Hmmm, where are all the single guys when I go to the movies alone?
Congrats on making it through a movie solo! When I became single going to a movie & a sit down restaurant by myself were two things I really wanted to conquer. I have now conquered both! I learned I loved going to the movies alone because no one's interrupting my movie experience with a bunch of comments. Going to a sit down restaurant was a bit scarier but I made it twice. Next goal would be going to these places on a Friday or Saturday night when it's the busiest..Not sure if I could do this...I went to both places during the day when all the grandma's and grandpa's go!
Dark Knight was the first movie I went to by myself as well. Also on a weeknight. weird.
